I had such a great time the other day. I went to career day at a local school. I spent a few hours talking to the children about being a doctor, letting them listen to each other's hearts and look into each other's ears. The children really enjoyed it and sent me the most wonderful thank you notes! But the truth is I think I had the most fun of all!!
Stepping out of "assembly line medicine" and creating an Ideal Medical Practice is what really made this possible. I was able to take a morning away from the office and go to the school. When a doctor is on the assembly line, they have appointments scheduled every 15-20 minutes, sometimes a little longer, maybe 30, for a more complicated situation. The doctor starts out behind and is running from the start. Having to check lab and x-ray results, read reports from specialists and answer calls and emails in between patients, during lunch or after clinic. The charting demands have become more time consuming. The Ideal Medical clinic is ideal for the patient as well as the doctor. Instead of spending 40 minutes waiting for 10 minutes with a doctor, how would you like NO waiting and then an hour with the doctor? As a doctor, I can tell you I would like that better. Running late and then feeling that I have to rush through to try and keep up and catch up makes me feel terrible. Asking people what they want has been very rewarding, and it turns out they want what I want: a good relationship with their physician, someone who will be there for them, time to have their questions answered, a doctor who can listen and hear what they are thinking and feeling.
This clinic is about me listening to you and creating a clinic that provides you what you have asked for and doing it in a way that allows me to have the time and energy to do things like Career Day at the local schools. This is win-win-win! You as the patient get what you want, I get to provide your care in a way that will be meaningful for both of us, and the whole community benefits! If 3 or 4 of those children become doctors, that means that Kauai will have doctors from here, with Ohana here. Those doctors will be much more likely to stay and practice on Kauai, improving access to good doctors who will not leave because their roots are here.
I am grateful and honored to be a family doctor practicing here on Kauai.
I am so excited that this is just the beginning of a great relationship with you! Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
